WHAT IS NEW AT THE SALT MARSH GALLERY

Julian Rowe

From his spacious garden studio near St Ives, Julian creates paintings that are collected across the UK and around the world. His work goes beyond capturing beautiful scenes; it seeks the quiet, poetic presence that lies beneath the surface of familiar landscapes. Julian aims to reveal the subtle, mystical mood - the ‘soul’ of a place - that stays with us long after we leave.

Through his evolving practice, he continues to draw back the veil between the everyday and the profound, offering viewers artwork that resonates emotionally and invites a deeper connection with the hills, harbours, and coastlines that inspire him.

Rachael Johnson

Rachael is a Bristol-based artist working with acrylic paint and handmade collage, creating abstract depictions of boats inspired by her childhood growing up by the river Fowey in Cornwall. Much of her practice is shaped by time spent in her father’s boat workshop, helping to sand, paint and restore wooden hulls.

Her work echoes this process of repair and weathering. Using collage to build textured surfaces, Rachael explores the contrast between fresh paint and worn, faded areas, often punctuated with bright colours drawn from buoys and working harbours. Each piece reflects a balance between concealment and exposure, carrying visible traces of time, use and memory.
